Kingdom Animalia: The Melanie Fyfe Story
Written by: Kalainithan Kalaichelvan | Directed by: Kalainithan Kalaichelvan | Genre: Comedy / Drama |
Melanie Fyfe may not sound familiar to you, but for the people of The Kingdom, she is the girl who changed it all. Melanie Fyfe, the one who changed everything. At 14 years old, she knew she wasn’t like everybody else. Something was just not right, she was trapped in a body that wasn’t her own. Melanie, as luck would have it, was actually an owl trapped in human form; and it was finally time to do something about it. The people protested. She was not an owl, she was clearly a human being. It was disgraceful and dangerous to allow this charade to continue. Yet, it did continue despite massive protests, scientific double-talk, and outright hatred. Finally, much to the delight of so many, Melanie made the change. Melanie became an owl. We should all be like Melanie… right?
It’s obvious that Melanie’s desire and self induced true form is a stand-in for labels of today’s society. With so many different nonbinary labels floating around in the world, it’s hard to keep track of them all. No matter what side of the fence you stand on though, Kalainithan Kalaichelvan’s very short film is still quite entertaining. I could argue that the completely off the wall story here is Kalaichelvan’s way of demonstrating just how unusual and completely not necessary things have become. Or, I could use the ending of the film as a pro stance on the subject. It’s all left up to the audience to decide where they stand. What struck me was the visual style of this short title. Part old school movie and part animation, the skewed angles and awkward old style cinema feel work well to showcase the subject matter of this title. There’s real attention given to small details that form the story being told. Some funny, some not so much but clearly, a lot of thought has been given to get the “feel” of this film correct. It all works quite well and this is a really fast 10 minute film. No matter your thoughts on the subject matter, Kingdom Animalia: The Melanie Fyfe story offers up a little something for you; all done with a comic timing that fits just right. Even if you’re not a fan of this particular style of movie, this is one that should keep your eyes on-screen with no problem. Kingdom Animalia: The Melanie Fyfe Story scores a four star rating with ease. Recommended viewing, thank you for reading. Find this title online |
